Meeting with Mauro Magliani and Antonio Mazzotta
On the occasion of the publication of the book Giovanni Bellini. Il Battesimo di Santa Corona, text by Antonio Mazzotta and photographs by Mauro Magliani, ed. ArtchivePortfolio.
This event will have the photographer Mauro Magliani and the art historian Antonio Mazzotta initially discuss about the editorial initiative ‘ArtchivePortfolio’ and the relationship between photographer and art historian in the reading and interpretation of images.
Antonio Mazzotta will then give a lecture on the history and the forms of Giovanni Bellini’s altarpiece with the Baptism of Christ (Vicenza, Santa Corona), which is the subject of the first issue of ‘ArtchivePortfolio’, and will make an excursus, with the help of the extraordinary images taken by Mauro Magliani, through the extraordinary altarpieces of Giovanni Bellini’s late career, which are all preserved in Venice.
Mauro Magliani was born in 1958 and he lives in Padua, Italy. He is a photographer and, during his professional career, he always photographed works of art, gaining a great deal of experience in this sector. He is well-known in the publishing and academic worlds. He has worked in Europe, in the USA, in the Middle East and in Africa. During over thirty years of activity, he has taken thousands of photographs and he has an archive of over 25,000 photographs of works of art. His wife Barbara works with him and is responsible for the digital post-production of the images. His photographs have been published in dozens of books, many of which are illustrated exclusively by them.
He recently created the website ‘Archive’ (http://www.artchiveonline.org), a digital platform of high resolution digital images of works of art - free and available to scholars and amateurs. He is also the promoter and publisher of the ‘series ‘ArtchivePortfolio’, which has as its first issue the monograph by Antonio Mazzotta on the ‘Baptism of Santa Corona’ by Giovanni Bellini.
Antonio Mazzotta is an art historian based in Milan, where he was born.
He graduated at the University of Milan, and then took an MA at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London.
He worked as Curatorial Assistant at the National Gallery in London in 2008-2010, and collaborated for the Leonardo exhibition there (2011) and curated himself a dossier exhibition entitled Titian’s First Masterpiece (2012). In 2010-2015 he took a PhD at the University of Milan, and he is currently Research Fellow there. He has collaborated in the cataloguing for international exhibitions, and he is curating an exhibition on the theme of Vesperbild that will open in Milan, Castello Sforzesco, in October 2018. His main research topics are Venetian and Lombard Renaissance art, and he has published important essays in international periodicals (‘Prospettiva’, ‘The Burlington Magazine’), including several studies on Giovanni Bellini, one of his main interests.
